Super Tuesday 2020.jpg

2020 Super Tuesday Democratic Primary Divination

March 3, 2020

And then there were four.

So much has happened in the last few days, but now the true test emerges for 15 states (including my own, Massachusetts). The media is saying is officially a “two-man race” - Bernie vs. Biden - and if I had to project without divination I would guess it would be a squeaker between those two, with Sanders ahead. However, the cards are not so sure. Literally not so sure - every one came up reversed, which in my style of divination means “totally up in the air”.

This is the first time the cards have diverged fairly significantly from what I think would happen, so I feel less confidence than I have to date in interpreting it. Still, this is a learning exercise above all! So, regardless of whether I turn out to be accurate or not, here goes:

SANDERS: Ace of Cups. This is still pretty positive for Sanders, and I think he comes out still leading in the delegate math. His supporters are passionate, and the fundamentals haven’t changed on that. (Interestingly, the Ace of Cups rx is one of the cards in my daily draw today; the other was the 3 of Wands, which is my card for ‘governance’.)

WARREN: The Hermit. Biggest card in the spread. Difficult to read because I now have skin in the game (after agonizing up to the last second I’m voting for Warren myself). I think it’s a decisive night for Warren. I think the Hermit’s lantern is clarifying, and Warren gains enough support to remain plausible, or at least a gamechanger for the two current frontrunners. Warren has expressed an intention to stay in till the convention, but if the results are weak, the Hermit could indicate withdrawal. Also, the Hermit is the ultimate nerd - i.e., “has a plan for everything”.

BIDEN: 9 of Swords. This is the biggest surprise, to me. Doesn’t at all look like someone who’s going to be walking off with a giant delegate prize. It looks like someone who’s saying “Oh, shit, this is it.” While I am personally anticipating Biden in 2nd given the consolidation of moderate support around him in the last 24 hours, the cards say 3rd or worse.

BLOOMBERG. 5 of Swords. Who says money can’t buy love? Here’s somebody who is working every unfair advantage he has. Personally I feel he’s going to come in last, but again, the cards disagree. The 5 of Swords is a Pyrrhic victory, a win with hard feelings. The draw suggests Bloomberg will make a big splash (probably in the rural states), but that it also causes folks to think about why they can’t stand him.

As always, I’m going to do the likely lineup, but I’m going to have to do it twice, since tarot and I disagree slightly about the likely outcome.

My best divination-assisted guess:
1. Sanders
2. Bloomberg
3. Biden
….with Warren a strong third or out.

My best conventional-wisdom-based guess:
1. Sanders
2. Biden
3. Bloomberg
4. Warren

Well, I’m off to vote! and if you live in Alabama, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Democrats Abroad, Maine, Massachusetts, Minnesota, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Vermont, or Virginia, you should too. I’ll check back tomorrow with an update.
